Combining machine learning (AI) and 3D animation, this video visualizes two depth maps computed by two different deep neural networks on the basis of the same film, Maya Deren’s martial arts film Meditation on Violence, a work about the interconnection between space, motion, and embodiment. This visualization highlights the tension between figure and ground, as the protagonist’s body sometimes escapes from the background and sometimes merges with it. It also shows that the same material can be interpreted in different ways by different algorithms. This work is best shown as a loop on a monitor or projection.
